Blankface is no stranger to Fish Wobble Wednesday, in fact he’s one of the first artist I wrote about in this series. Yesterday he gave away a nice collection of tracks that he’s been working on, and yes its chalk full of fish wobble goodness. Mostly known for his aggressive wobble attack sound, Blanky’s production has evolved to encompass a diversity of sounds and has a few of the deep dungeon sounding tracks reminiscent of early era Dubstep. The most effective way to understand the calm and collected aura he gives off is to enter a dark dingy club on a system pushing sub bass through your chest as he’s orchestrating a live set of original tracks. Keep on the lookout as he progresses through the dark forest of the underground electronic music scene.

Thank god. It seems trap producers are making a real effort to keep the style fresh and not recycle the same old formula. While 808′s, fast hi-hats, and snare rolls will always be part of the genre, there are a so many artists now getting more comfortable using new sounds and rhythms. This week is just a sample of some of those artists. While it’s no surprise why ƱZ is here, the real highlights of this batch are the up-and-comers: Brazillian Tropkillas, LA’s Kayzo, and our friends Chasing Dragonz. Naugen Garro, a local villager stomping tracks out of El Bolson, Argentina. Wobad started off remixing latin music at the age of 8, then at 15 moved on to start producing electronic music. Wondering where he got his name? Wobad is an acronym standing for WObbles Bass And Drums, and boy does he give that name justice. His productions stem from aggressive robot orgies to synthetic fluid machinery presented in the form of a track. Wobad has two releases on ABR Records, and currently collaborating with Definitive, Tokez, and Deemed. He’s got some local gigs but has his eye on a U.S. tour so be sure to keep tabs on this talented fellow.

The dynamic duo PANTyRAiD has been rolling out free downloads over the past few weeks to get the word out about their upcoming album “Pillow Talk,” due May 28. Since before the inception of the blog, we’ve always been huge supporters of Ooah and The Glitch Mob and MartyParty has put out one of the meanest mixtapes we’ve ever had the immense pleasure of releasing.

As a follow up to PANTyRAiD’s debut album, “The Sauce” and their “Superior EP,” the Ooah and Marty seem to constantly working to move their style forward and dip into different genres and iterations while keeping their signature dirty-sex sound intact (evidenced by their free remix of Rihanna’s “Pour It Up“). Their newest freebie takes Tommyboy’s “Dance On” 4/4 trance beat, and drives that mother into “huge 808 trap drops while still retaining a psychedlic feeling full of swag, sex, and surprise.” One of the most anticipated releases of the month, it’s safe to assume that come May 28, panties will hit the floor.

Most real fans of bass music know that Starkey has always been a genre bender. His take on the trap genre with the Fade EP is no different. It’s gotten mixed reviews on the Soundcloud comments but genres need artists like Starkbot who aren’t afraid to shake things up and rock the proverbial boat to see what ripples. Snares at 2 and 4? Fuhgeddabout it.

Sonny Moore, aka Skrillex, has decided he is building an 11,000 square foot space in LA’s Chinatown to be a studio facility for the “computer musician.”

Recently, the Ibiza International Music Summit presented their first IMS Engage Summit in Hollywood, CA at the W Hotel, in which they paired 12 producers, managers, label-heads, and executives including Skrillex, Pete Tong, Diplo, Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, Beatport COO Matthew Adell, Ultra Records founder Patrick Moxey, and more, to be panelists throughout the day. What coalesced was a series of engaging discussions between a gamut of prominent multi-disciplinarian innovators in electronic music and beyond about the reaches of the genre and how its evolved to where its going. The event drew in global attendees from electronic music and associated industries looking to gain the insight from some of music’s most seasoned and successful figureheads. And that they did.

The highlight discussion of the day was that between Sonny Moore and Summit Series co-founder Jeff Rosenthal, in which Sonny discussed his career before “Skrillex,” how he was $30,000 in debt 3 years ago, and the things he’s had to do and philosophies he’s adopted to succeed. Rosenthal having gone through similar financial difficulties in organizing the first few Summit Series events, was a perfect fit for Sonny in this panel. Whether you’re a fan of Skrillex or not, the panel was nevertheless an really insightful discussion about the past, present, and future of EDM.

In explaining the reason for building the new studio, Moore stated that he wanted to build a place where an artist won’t be criticized for being themselves. “Music and fine art are totally two different things,” he said, “music is like a visceral feeling where you have fun and you enjoy yourself- it’s not meant (at least the type of music I do), to be picked apart and criticized.” Moore went even further, attributing his success to having like-minded, and more importantly, positive people working with him who had that same gut feeling, “because then you can feed off that and complete stuff. If you don’t have that same energy with the people you’re working with, you’ll never get anything done because you’re like ‘man, I should change this’ or ‘it’s not working.’” 

Looking past the fads and what dubstep and EDM is and isn’t, people sometimes forget there are normal people behind the music doing what they dig. It’s refreshing to hear first-hand what the person on the other side of the looking glass (or DJ booth) thinks, especially someone under the microscope of controversy. It’s a fact: Skrillex is not for everyone, but for anyone wishing they could “make it” in the EDM industry, Sonny Moore is probably a dude worth listening to.

The Gremlins, hailing mostly out of London are 5 producers: Deemed (U.S), Coax, Stanton, K.E.V, and Jacko. All grew up around each other (except for Deemed), and started producing as a group after a radio show with Coffi. Inspired by the likes of Coffi, Subfiltronik, 50 Carrot, and even Mozart, this quintet has continued to produce high quality fish wobbles for over a year now. The first track to come out of the collective was a track called Cursed Nurse. They’re currently putting their efforts into an E.P. coming out on Vibetown Records. Similar to the gremlins of the silver screen, they’re relentless when it comes to their sound and monstrous with their sub bass, leaving their listeners anxious and a bit disturbed. Sleep with one eye open and be sure to keep a safe distance.

Geeking out on some music shit with the homie the other day and he asked what happens when the future sound becomes old? Old school future? And then I put on my lab coat with pocket protector, and dish out, “It’s the manifestation of where music is at right now, and really isn’t “future” but “now”. So here are my picks for my first installment of the FVTVR3 $HIT (Future Shit, yahuuurd?):

A little late on the bus with this one but I didn’t wanna let this pass under your radars. TYR just released his second Moby remix of Natural Blues. Something about a smooth soul vocal on an electronic bed just works so well. Moby knew this, and TYR knew that. So what we have here is a wonderfully energetic and glitchy electro breaks track with pitched up vocals and caustic synths, turning the original Moby hit into a dancefloor banger.
